I’ve been a vendor at the SJFM since it’s inception as the point of contact for The Organic Farm in Portugal Cove. The first week or two it was a little bit of a chore, to be honest, giving up Friday nights out to be up early and out with product to take to market.
But once I got there, I made friends quickly with people I didn’t know, and saw familiar faces that I have known for many years. It quickly moved from being in the ‘chore’ list to something I look forward to every week. Hundreds of faces, often over a thousand, come through the door every Saturday morning, and the energy, the vibrant feel of the social experiment is amazing.
As an organic producer, we sell whatever fruit and veg is ready that week, help to educate consumers about food choices, cut out the middleman to deal with the customers directly and make more actual dollars for the farm. I don’t know anywhere else on the Avalon that I have as much fun on a regular basis. All in all, it is a very positive experience for all involved.
